The School of Geoscience and Surveying and Mapping Engineering of China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing) was formed on May 18, 2009 from the former Department of Resources and Earth Science and Department of Surveying and Mapping and Land Science of the College of Resources and Safety Engineering. Its predecessor was the "Geological Survey Research Laboratory" and later the "Geology Committee" of the Graduate School of China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) in Beijing in 1978, and its predecessor was the Coal Field Geology Department of Beijing Mining and Technology College (BMTC) in 1953 and the Department of Mine Civil Engineering of China University of Mining and Technology (CUMTC) in 1952, and the Department of Geoscience and Surveying Engineering of China University of Mining and Technology. It can be traced back to the Coal Field Geology Department of Beijing Mining College established in 1953, the Surveying Department of the Mining and Civil Engineering Department of China Mining College in 1952, the Coal Field Geological Engineering Department of China Mining College in 1951, and the Geological Engineering Department of China Mining College in 1950. At present, the college consists of five departments, namely, Department of Energy Geology, Department of Surveying, Mapping and Land Use, Department of Geological Engineering and Environment, Department of Geophysics and Information, Department of Remote Sensing and Geoinformation, and the Experimental Center of Geodesy.

The College has one national key discipline, one national key cultivation discipline, three first-level disciplines of doctoral degree authorization points and postdoctoral mobile stations, three disciplines of "Cheung Kong Scholars" award program for specially appointed professors, and one discipline selected in the list of Beijing's high-precision and sharp disciplines construction. There are 17 second-level doctoral programs, 21 second-level master's programs, 2 engineering master's fields and 7 undergraduate programs. In the fourth round of discipline assessment by the Ministry of Education, "Geological Resources and Geological Engineering" and "Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology" were rated as A- category. The discipline of earth science has entered the top 1% of ESI global ranking, and the specialty of "Resource Exploration Engineering" has passed the professional certification of engineering education.

There are 100 teaching staff in the college.  Five teachers' doctoral dissertations were selected as one of the 100 best doctoral dissertations in China, one of them was nominated for the Fifth China Young Women Scientist Award, one of them was awarded the China Top Ten Excellent Postdoctoral Award, three of them were awarded the Teaching Master Award of Beijing Higher Education Institutions, three teams were selected for the Ministry of Education's "Innovative Teams Development Program", three were selected for the Ministry of Education's "Trans-Century Talents Training Program Three teams were selected for the "Trans-century Talent Cultivation Program" of the Ministry of Education, three were selected for the "Trans-century Talent Cultivation Program" of the Ministry of Education, ten were selected for the "New Century Talent Support Program" of the Ministry of Education, two were awarded the Outstanding Youth Science Fund, one was selected for the "Support Program for Young Top Talents" of the Ministry of Organization and Development of the People's Republic of China, four were awarded the Youth Award for Geological Science and Technology, and two were selected for the Youth Support Program of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology. Two of them have been selected for the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) Youth Talent Support Program.

The college attaches importance to the comprehensive cultivation of students' moral character, basic knowledge, scientific research ability and innovative consciousness. Strong faculty, advanced teaching and laboratory equipment, good academic atmosphere and scientific management provide a solid guarantee for the growth of talents.  In recent years, the college's undergraduate graduates' advancement rate has reached about 60%, the employment rate of undergraduates has reached more than 98%, and the employment rate of graduated postgraduates has reached 100%.

In terms of talent cultivation, the college has won more than 20 teaching awards at provincial and ministerial levels, and 2 representative teaching projects. 1 student group branch has been awarded the title of "May 4 Red Flag" advanced group branch in Beijing, several group branches have been awarded the title of "Beijing Pioneer Cup Advanced Group Branch", 3 class groups have been awarded "Beijing Model Class Group", and more than 100 students have participated in the National Undergraduate Geological Skills Competition, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Undergraduate Surveying and Mapping Skills Competition and National Undergraduate Geophysical Knowledge Competition.  One student group was awarded the title of "Beijing May Fourth Red Flag", several groups were awarded the title of "Beijing Pioneer Cup Advanced Group Groups", three groups were awarded the title of "Beijing Model Groups", and more than one hundred students participated in the National Geological Skills Competition for College Students, the Surveying and Mapping Skills Competition for College Students of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Higher Education Institutions and the National Geophysical Competition for College Students.

With the State Key Laboratory of Coal Resources and Safe Mining and the National Coal Mine Water Hazard Prevention and Control Engineering and Technology Research Center as its high-level scientific research platform, the college has a complete range of disciplines, distinctive features, strong strength, advanced equipment, and fruitful results.  The college has 3 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, and has undertaken more than 70 national scientific research projects, such as the National Key Research and Development Program, the National "973", "863", the National Science and Technology Support Program, the National Major Scientific and Technological Special Projects, and the Key Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. There are two national "111" intellectually stimulating bases. In the past five years, teachers of the college have been awarded 3 national scientific and technological progress awards and 35 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological awards.

The Party Committee of the College has conscientiously fulfilled its main responsibility, given full play to the role of the political core and the role of the Party branch as a fighting fortress, led all the teachers of the College to study and implement Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and integrated the cultivation and practice of socialist core values into the whole process of teaching and educating people, which has vigorously pushed forward the all-round development of the College's Party building and ideological and political education, teaching and scientific research, and disciplinary construction, and other work.  The Party Committee of the college was selected as one of the first batch of "National Benchmark Faculties and Departments for Party Building Work" (2018), and was awarded "Advanced Grass-roots Party Organizations of Beijing Colleges and Universities in Striving for Excellence and Creating Pioneers (2012)"; and the Party Branch of Master 16-3 was awarded the "Red '1-1' Award of Beijing Colleges and Universities". First Prize of Red '1+1' Demonstration Activity in Beijing Colleges and Universities" (2017); the labor union of the college won the "Advanced Staff Small Family of Beijing Education Labor Union" (2017) and "Beijing Municipal Federation of Trade Unions Employee Warming Station" (2018); the Youth League Committee of the College was honored as the "Red Flag Youth League Committee of National Coal System" (2014).
